In 2021, Cherwell School invited TSH to revisit a Masterplan we originally produced in 2014 to outline future development of the School.
From the analysis of the sites and grounds, initial design options study and feedback from the school, a list of 12 points to be addressed for improvement was developed. The 12 points highlight accommodation and design challenges on both their North (Secondary) and South (Primary) sites on either side of Marston Ferry Road, Oxford.
The first phase of the masterplan was the installation of the new All Weather Pitch, built in 2022. Phase 2 was a new Multi-purpose Sports Building alongside. As well as the 5 court sports hall, the new building will have a Multi gym, Dance/ Fitness Studio, Cafe, Viewing opportunities, Staff base, PE Theory classroom, Changing facilities and Storage.
The target of Net-Zero Carbon building was adopted and will be achieved by using:
- fabric first approach with low u-values, good air tightness, solar design and daylighting,
- energy efficient services – air source heat pumps and minimising distribution losses,
- renewable technologies such as on site electricity generation through photovoltaic panels orientated south
- excellent form factor to reduce heat loss and therefore energy demands,
- low embodied energy timber frame structure with Glulam beams to achieve the long span across the sports hall,
- biodiverse green roof that combines solar panels.
Further phases of the masterplan would include creating a new pedestrian passage between the North Site and the South site which are currently divided by the busy Marston Ferry Road.
